Genoa is arguably one of the biggest revelations in Serie A in recent months, if we review the 2nd half of the table. The club, which seemed destined to fight for survival yet again, is now sitting comfortably +10 points clear of relegation zone and the game in context in store.
Davide Ballardini has been doing a great job upon return to Genoa. He used to work at the club some years ago, but the 2nd coming has so far been close to perfect. From 10 games under his management Genoa has lost only 2 - against Sassuolo and Juventus. The latter was a Cup fixture, which means in 9 Serie A games Genoa’s lost just once…
In fact, I can’t recall a single match across the last 5 rounds, where Genoa would’ve been outplayed by the opposition. The team is looking so solid, monolith and confident, benefiting from great experience of players like Strootman, Criscito or Pandev, while adding the passion of young blood like the interesting loaned wingback Czyborra or defensive midfielder Rovella. Genoa has this great blend of eld and youth.
Verona is almost all about youth, in contrast. Their project is really interesting and it has been continued despite the summer loss of some key elements. The warrant of team’s progress is manager Ivan Juric, who is taking maximum from virtually any player he’s given to work with. But with all due respect, the team is currently far from its’ best condition. Verona did collect 6 points from 2 recent home fixtures (vs. collapsing Parma and Napoli), but in turn failed to show anything worthy against Udinese (were totally outplayed and ran into the ground in that particular match), Roma or Bologna.
As a result Verona’s away record in the last 5 games is 1-1-3 with the last win on the road dating back to January 3rd (1-0 vs. Spezia).
Besides, visitors have much greater casualty list ahead of the game, missing important wingback DiMarco (suspension) and centre-back Ceccherini (injury), as well as a few other regular/rotation players.
With the current form Genoa is showcasing in its’ games, I doubt, Verona will find a way to take 3 points home from this visit.
