As I’ve mentioned earlier in one of the opening previews to EURO’20, Germany is my number 1 favourite for the title. It does not necessarily mean I am going to be backing them to win on any handicap, but I do expect them to cruise past Hungary on Wednesday.

After a problematic and tough opening game of the group stage against France (0:1), Germany made a strong statement with their club-like performance vs. Portugal (4:2). By saying “club-like”, I am referring to how well synched the team was in their build-up and at creating chances. If you refer to the majority of metric data, the German display was nothing short of exceptional and similar to what you’d see from Bayern or Atalanta. The outstanding aspect about this improvement to the defeat against France is that the manager Low found a way to change things for the best without modifying the lineup. Just a few tactical tweaks here and there and the team showed its true potential.

My high expectations for German NT directly correlate with some of English Premier League and Bundesliga leading players. Goretzka, Kimmich, Muller (now injured unfortunately), Neuer (all Bayern), then Rudiger, Havertz, Werner (all Chelsea) should take their club form to EURO’20 venues. In this difficult pandemic period physique will be more decisive than ever and power on the pitch has always been German trademark. Opening 2 games showed they are in strikingly decent conditions.

Hungary caused issues to their opponents in the first 2 games. Both Portugal and France were made to make a serious run to get results, but with all due respect there was more heroics and emotions to Hungary’s performance than anything else. The insane domestic support in Budapest of the 61 000 crowd is no longer with the team - this is their first match on the road at the tournament.

This should be the final destination of Hungarian fairy tale. Let me remind you, visitors are in a must-win situation - failure to take 3 points in Munich will see the team out of the tournament.

Their modest squad, which had not shown anything worthy in terms of stats, is highly unlikely to cause issues to uprising Germans.. The only worrying factor here is that a draw should work for Germany anyway - with 4 points and positive goal difference they will simply finish as one of the best 3rd placed teams. However, it is not characteristic of Germans to show such pragmatism and, I believe, they must push to give the crowd their money's worth.
