Italy’s unbeaten run is 32 games, and it will end some day, right?
They did beat Belgium last round, and also the pace of match completely as the ball was not within play much for the last 30 minutes. They also suffered a bad loss in the form the of injury to Spinazzola, who has been their most attacking defensing player and entered the box more than any other player so far. In the bigger picture however Italy have impressed, but the difficulties vs both Austria and Belgium make me doubt if they are not quite title winning material after all. Also Florenzi is a doubt tonight in London. Is the fullback on the left then Emerson? That would be a huge downgrade, even a problem!
Spain have wasted chances and been sloppy at times, but they still have created the most xG of all teams and rotated heavily, so there is a lot of potential and less tired legs in the team. The match v Switzerland was not a brilliant perfomance, but without the super match from Swiss keeper Yann Sommer it would had been decided already earlier. Spain’ s pressure also has been the best of all teams so far if we define it via the pass chains of the other team, and this will be the first time Italy face this kind of a challenge.
Naturally at this level there are now excellent individual players at both sides, they know every little detail of each other and the margins are narrow. The match will be decided by something, set pieces, mistakes, individual magic, match winning saves.. you name it!
Last time the teams met in competitive matches were WC qualifications, Spain won 3-0 at home, drew away.
The teams have probably the best national team coaches at the moment, Luis Enrique and Mancini.
Spain have striker Sarabia on the doubt list, personally he would not be a starter if I were the coach but what do I know?
Very much 50/50 game this one, but I believe there is much in Spain that we have seen so far.
