Opening matchday did not work out for me a fortnight ago, so I am looking for some redemption in days to come.
Shakhtar-Inter tie is first on the list for a variety of reasons. First of which is the current state of Ukrainian vice-champions. Contrary to all the buzz around them following De Zerbi’s assignment from Sassuolo and solid purchases of L.Traore (Ajax), Marlon (Sassuolo) and Pedrinho (Benfica), the team’s been largely disappointing throughout the season.
I would not go much against the truth to claim that up to this day Shakhtar is yet to deliver a single convincing display under De Zerbi. Specialists have mixed views on his perspectives, some suggesting the Italian requires more time to integrate ideas, others sceptically await his total failure. The latter number is rapidly increasing.
Shakhtar made fools of themselves with the opening matchday embarrassment against Sheriff (0-2 defeat). They did go on to win the following 3 games on the domestic front, however, this has not solved their fundamental issues. They remain too unorganized at the back and slow in playing out from defense. Counter attacking football is non-existent as a unit. The team’s yet to show anything in that regard.
Shakhtar luckily passed Monaco in the 2 legged play-off tie, miraculously winning in France and then holding on to the lead in the return fixture.
One of the main differences between those tests and the upcoming face-off with Inter is the absence of first-choice keeper Trubin. He had sustained an injury that kept him out of action for nearly 2 months. Trubin’s expected to feature on the bench after having his first squad list induction at the weekend.
Inter Milan, on the opposite end, has improved under Simone Inzaghi to what they were with Conte in charge. Lukaku’s sale and Eriksen’s heart problems aside, Inter’s become more flexible, aggressive and hungry, so to speak. They were outdone by Courtois' magic on matchday 1, losing against any logical sense to Real Madrid, who, in fact, deserved to be beaten by a 2 goals margin.
Failure to get any points puts them under pressure of performing at their maximum in Ukraine.
Inzaghi has no injury concerns to worry about as his optimal XI is available. Correa or Sensi's absence has no value, nor does Eriksen’s, since he’s been out for months.
This free flowing, fully motivated Inter must prove too much for the young mish-mash Brazilian Shakhtar, who are not ready for opponents of such quality at this stage of the season. Hosts will need to score at least once to avoid defeat, as Inter’s found the net at least twice in all their Serie A games, be it Atalanta or Fiorentina as their opponents.
