A big game at the Stade Velodrome on Sunday evening and I expect Paris Saint Germain to get out on top, despite their less than convincing form under Pochettino.
The reason for my optimism regarding PSG’s chances is the way Marseille plays under current manager Sampaoli. The Argentine specialist is employing a rock-n-roll tactic, which basically works in the 3331 formation - something nobody practices in modern football, perhaps, Bielsa and his Leeds aside. But the Chilean is more conservative in the English Premier League.
The approach/tactic worked quite well at some point for Marseille, but then opponents found ways to offer counter measures and neutralize Sampaoli’s ideas. I am far from having any illusions regarding Marseille and their prospects under Sampaoli. The current 3rd position means nothing as Montpellier in 12th is just 4 points behind. A couple of negative results and Marseille will crash out of the top 10 zone easily.
PSG is bored of Ligue1 on most occasions - thus the lacklustre results and performances. Yet, the team is top of the table with a 9-0-1 record, which underlines the great potential. Imagine what it would look like if they actually started playing to expectations.
I expect the roaring Velodrome and buzzing fans to deliver that X-factor motivation for PSG, that will bring the best out of their star-packed squad.
Besides, Marseille’s all-out attacking approach should prove suicidal and way too comforting for Messi and Mbappe.
This has to be a cracking affair and the one visitors will be winning by the full time whistle.
