I was going against BVB recently with a pick on Wolfsburg, however, Borussia’s eventual display in the 2-0 win proved my scepticism wrong, while the following 3-1 triumph on the road against RB Leipzig sealed the effect.
Apparently, the change of manager has done a world of good for the team, which was rotting under Favre, despite the well tuned football.
Another positive and undeniable factor is the return of Erik Haaland to full fitness. At the moment, to BVB’s shame, they are a different team with the Norwegian on the pitch. Everything about their football has more sense with Haaland at the edge. Reus has also improved as he has the go-to-guy for his creative passes.
The trick with an absolute noname manager having such a big impact on the dressing room is nothing new for Bundesliga. Just a while ago we saw Flick step in for Niko Kovac at Bayern and lead the team victories in all competitions they were taking part in. There was also a similar transformation at Koln, which eventually saved them from relegation. Though, their new manager at least had some background in the profession. Edin Terzi, who is in the driving seat at Dortmund, may well roll on this wave of enthusiasm for at least few months. The quality of BVB’s squad should surely allow him to do so.
Mainz is a mess on all levels this season “thanks” to shambolic management. It has seen the club collapse into the relegation zone and sit firmly on course to Bundesliga 2. They are even worse than Schalke 04 this season, which is an “achievement” of its own.
Mainz will go into this match with an incredible 4th (!) new manager in charge, this time, it’s ex- defender Bo Svensson. He already had his debut in the previous round, losing 0-2 to Eintracht.
Getting anything from such a tough visit seems as mission impossible for the sinking Mainz. Team news do not suggest much either as BVB are only set to miss centre-mid Witsel with injury. Other absentees have 0 relevance for home total strength.
This has to be a 2 goals + win for Borussia, so the -2 handicap in Asia is at least a “push”, if you fancy this option as I do.
