This is a special match for WBA’s head coach Valerien Ismael. He made his name by coaching Barnsley last season and he says that he is always grateful.
The Frenchman took over Barnsley in October 2020 and won 23 of his 39 league games, leading the fifth-placed Reds to the Championship play-offs for the first time since 2000, in which they lost to Swansea in the semi-final.
He moved to West Brom the following month, taking with him three members of staff. Barnsley’s captain Alex Mowatt also follow him, siging with the Baggies as free agent.
WBA are third in the table, three points off the top two and five off top. They have the plan to climb to the top around New Year.
Barnsley are struggling against relegation under new head coach Poya Asbaghi who was appointed last month.
I don’t think WBA will want to waste tonight’s match. But considering the busy match schedule ahead, they would be happy to play a friendly game against Barnsley and go at full in the next 3 games starting from Boxing Day.
