MALMO - HACKEN
Malmö return to Allsvenskan duty this weekend with the weight of expectation growing heavier by the hour. A stuttering league campaign, a painful penalty shootout loss in the cup final just days ago – and now, a rematch against that same Häcken side, but this time at home. If there was ever a moment where Malmö have to respond, this is it.
Despite their current issues, let’s not get it twisted – Malmö still boast the strongest and deepest squad in Sweden. They are the reigning champions, and the undisputed heavyweights of this league when firing. The problem? They’ve not quite found that rhythm yet. As has so often been the case, the season has started slowly. The puzzle pieces aren’t clicking just yet, especially in the final third, but this is also the phase where Malmö tend to recalibrate and push into title-contending form.
The league table tells a more worrying story, though. Twelve rounds in, and Malmö are already eight points behind leaders Mjällby. That kind of gap can quickly become unmanageable in a league like the Allsvenskan, where dropped points rarely go unpunished. With that in mind, this weekend’s clash isn’t just about revenge against Häcken – it’s about keeping the season alive.
There were glimpses of promise even in the cup final defeat. Malmö had more shots, better chances, and if not for wastefulness in front of goal – and some lacklustre finishing in key moments – they could have sealed that trophy in 90 minutes. Taha Ali created chance after chance, but the finishing touch was missing. That’s something that simply has to improve this weekend.
Lasse Berg Johnsen is suspended, but the news of Robin Olsen’s signing is a statement in itself. This is a club that continues to build, to think long term, even amidst short-term turbulence. Injuries continue to be a factor – Pontus Jansson, Johan Dahlin, Stefano Vecchia all remain sidelined – but the squad is still miles ahead of most in the league.
Häcken, for their part, come into this with momentum from their cup win but also a squad that’s been badly stretched. The injury list reads like a full XI: Hammar, Vaisanen, Wembangomo, Linde, Inoussa – just to name a few. Their defence is held together with patches, and that kind of instability is dangerous against a Malmö side desperate to bounce back.
Still, Häcken deserve credit for how they’ve coped. Three games unbeaten, including that final, and they’ve managed to keep themselves within reach of the top half despite the circumstances. But while the cup final was played on neutral psychological terms, this rematch is different. Malmö are cornered, at home, and in front of fans who are demanding a response.
This might not be a free-flowing goal fest – in fact, recent meetings between these two suggest it could be a tight and tactical affair – but Malmö simply cannot afford to miss this opportunity. Häcken have already taken one major prize off them this month. Letting them leave with points again, especially given their absentees, would be inexcusable.
If Henrik Rydström still has the dressing room behind him – and there’s little to suggest he doesn’t – then Malmö should finally put their foot down here. Their squad, their context, and the urgency of their situation all point in one direction.
BROMMAPOJKARNA - GOTEBORG
IFK Göteborg head to Grimsta IP with a renewed sense of purpose and momentum — and for once in recent memory, a feeling that things might finally be falling into place. Back-to-back wins over Degerfors and Malmö have not only boosted their position in the table but also lifted the mood around a club that has struggled to find rhythm or stability in recent seasons. On Sunday, against a tired and out-of-sorts Brommapojkarna, they have a golden chance to go into the summer break with three straight wins — a scenario that would’ve seemed unlikely just a few weeks ago.
It’s not just the wins, it’s the way they’ve come. Göteborg looked composed and defensively solid in the 1-0 victory over Malmö, doing exactly what was needed to shut out the champions. That followed a confident 2-0 win away at Degerfors, a match where the return to form of Tobias Heintz proved decisive. He’s now been directly involved in three goals over the past two matches and has a key role to play again this weekend. The suspension of August Erlingmark is a blow, of course, but they’ve shown recently that they’re capable of adapting — and crucially, the rest of the squad is largely intact.
Away from Gamla Ullevi, Blåvitt have actually played with more freedom this year. The pressure seems to lift, and the stats reflect it: three wins from five league matches on the road is a very respectable return. They also tend to manage matches better when they’re allowed to play more on reaction and transition — something they’re likely to be able to do against a Brommapojkarna side that typically tries to control possession.
For BP, the situation is more concerning. Five straight defeats in the league, and just one goal scored in their last 275 minutes of football — they’ve not been humiliated, but the lack of sharpness in both boxes is a clear issue. Missed penalties, marginal offside calls, and woodwork rattled — the frustration is piling up. But this weekend brings their third game in seven days, and it’s no secret that they’ve got one of the thinner squads in the league. The likes of Hovland and Junior have logged heavy minutes, and with just two rest days following the Djurgården loss, fatigue will be a major factor.
Nikola Vasic remains out, and BP continue to lack a reliable goalscorer. That’s made worse by the mental weight of recent narrow losses — games in which they’ve been competitive but unable to finish or defend critical moments. It’s one thing to lose to top-half teams. It’s another to do so repeatedly while showing little variation or solution. And now comes a Göteborg side that smells blood.
Given BP’s schedule, their limited depth, and Göteborg’s resurgence, the visitors have every reason to feel confident. A third win in a row would cap off a very successful mini-revival for a club that desperately needed something to build from. Even a draw would be acceptable in the context of recent results — but the way BP are trending, it’s hard to see Göteborg not taking at least something from this game.
They look sharper, more motivated, and crucially, far more balanced in both phases of play. A team on the rise against one running on fumes — and with that kind of contrast, form often tells the story.
Brommapojkarna -
