Manchester United host Aston Villa in the FA Cup 3rd Round. After a disappointing loss to Wolves at Old Trafford, United have had a week off to work out how to solve the problems on and off the pitch.
There seem to be rumours of general unhappiness and cliques forming at the club and while some players such as Fred, Rashford, Fernandes and Maguire have silenced some of the rumours there are still problems at the club. The football has been inconsistent and often shoddy and the players have lost some of the spark and chemistry they had under Ole.
Rangnick needs to turn around the club’s fortunes but a lot of the ‘work’ has to be done on the pitch by the players.
Having not won a trophy since winning the Europa League back in 2017, the Reds are desperate to get some silverware on board and the FA Cup arguably represents the clubs best chance of winning a trophy this season. This team hasn’t won any silverware yet. One of the biggest criticisms of the Solskjaer reign.
The FA Cup may not be top of everybody priority list but, with only top four to play for in the Premier League and the European Cup looking a mighty tough ask, winning the FA Cup would get the club back in the habit of winning trophies again, which is why it’s so important Rangnick takes Monday’s game seriously.
Today they face Aston Villa who have been very impressive under Steven Gerrard. Villa will field a strong team as winning the cup could emphasise the progress Villa have made under Gerrard.
Aston Villa are riding on the back of successive Premier League defeats against Chelsea and Brentford. They have a lot of work to do to get their season back on track. They've made no secret of their ambitions by signing Philippe Coutinho on loan from Barcelona for the remainder of the season, but he won’t be able to play today yet.
It won’t be an easy game for United. With their loyalty and commitment to Manchester United questioned, there is only one way the players can respond to this. That's by producing a spirited performance against Steven Gerrard's men today. It’s a game United dare not lose should they wish to turn their season around and one which I do think they will win albeit it will be close.
United have had a week without fixtures, they have been training and preparing all week, there are no excuses. They know what’s been coming out in the news with questions over their commitment. Now is a chance to prove that wrong in front of a full Old Trafford crowd. I’d like to hope they will d
