BAYERN - CHELSEA
It is impossible to approach a Bayern–Chelsea clash at the Allianz without immediately thinking back to 2012, when Chelsea stunned the Germans in their own house. That history will always live in the minds of Blues supporters, but from my point of view this game feels very different. Bayern today are not only relentless in the Bundesliga, they are also beginning to resemble once again that ruthless machine that rarely wastes a step in Europe. Five wins from five to open the season, a Super Cup already in the cabinet, and a front line that looks as dangerous as any in the competition.
Harry Kane is at the centre of it all. I’ve always believed that his move to Munich would take him from elite striker to continental giant, and his start confirms that. Eleven goal contributions in just seven games for club and country is extraordinary. Add to that his personal taste for playing against Chelsea – something he showed regularly during his Spurs years – and you have a forward who will relish this occasion. Around him, Luis Díaz has settled into life in Bavaria with remarkable ease, Michael Olise is beginning to offer that cutting edge between the lines, and Serge Gnabry still gives them verticality and unpredictability. Vincent Kompany may be relatively new to this level as a coach, but his Bayern side already plays with the structure and freedom reminiscent of Guardiola’s influence.
From Chelsea’s perspective, the return to the Champions League is welcome but comes at a delicate moment. Maresca’s team remains unbeaten, yes, but the fragility at the back is evident. Two clean sheets in four matches hardly speaks of resilience, and in Germany against such an attack, that is the one thing you cannot afford. Cole Palmer’s return is vital, not only because he is the one player who consistently finds end product, but also because his intelligence between the lines allows Chelsea to hold the ball a little higher, easing the pressure on their defensive line. Still, the absences of Colwill, Badiashile, Lavia and Delap rob Maresca of balance and depth.
I see this tie playing out with Bayern on the front foot early, as they so often do at home. The Allianz has been a fortress for over a decade in the group stage, and Bayern have the remarkable record of winning their first Champions League fixture in 22 straight campaigns. Chelsea will try to control rhythm with Caicedo and Enzo Fernández, but my concern is whether the Blues’ back four can withstand Bayern’s combinations, especially with Kane dropping and creating spaces for runners. Chalobah and Tosin will need the match of their lives to keep the lines compact.
What I do think gives Bayern a decisive edge is their ability to punish small errors. Chelsea under Maresca are still a project, a side that looks brilliant in certain spells but not fully tuned to ninety-minute concentration at the very highest level. In London derbies already we have seen moments of lapse that opponents like Brentford or Fulham have seized upon. Bayern will not be so forgiving.
So while Chelsea may have enough to trouble the Germans – Palmer floating into pockets, Neto attacking one-versus-one, perhaps even a set-piece goal – my personal feeling is that Bayern’s attacking depth and Kane’s clinical edge will ultimately prove too much. The Londoners may find small victories in passages of play, but in the grander picture this is Bayern’s night to underline once again that they are serious contenders for the crown.
LIVERPOOL - ATLETICO
The Champions League under the lights of Anfield has its own script, and Liverpool against Atlético always brings out that extra layer of tension. This season the dynamics are quite particular: Arne Slot’s Liverpool arrive with maximum confidence after four wins out of four in the Premier League, all of them achieved in dramatic fashion with decisive late goals. That detail says much about the mentality of this team. Even when the game becomes tight and the opposition closes spaces, they have found ways to push until the very last breath. Salah’s 95th-minute penalty at Burnley is the perfect example: it was not a vintage Liverpool performance, but it was once again proof of resilience and mental superiority.
The big talking point on Merseyside is of course Alexander Isak. Slot has confirmed the Swede is ready for a debut, though not yet for ninety minutes. The plan looks clear: Hugo Ekitike should start as the mobile reference up front, with Isak coming on for half an hour or so, a move that could change the rhythm of the match. Around them, there is a clear structure forming. Gravenberch and Mac Allister are building an effective double pivot, offering stability and range of pass. Florian Wirtz is the conductor, still adjusting to English football but already showing how he can unpick blocks with movement and vision. And Salah, as ever, remains the constant menace, targeting the spaces behind left-backs and carrying the weight of decisive moments.
Liverpool’s strength lies in their energy out wide. Frimpong and Kerkez both push high, which is crucial to stretch compact systems, but also dangerous against a side like Atlético. Simeone’s men live on turnovers and rapid transitions. Llorente’s ability to carry metres with the ball, combined with Griezmann’s intelligence in finding those channels behind advanced full-backs, is the main weapon the visitors will try to exploit. If Atlético are to leave Anfield with something, they will need to be precise in those moments, because Liverpool are pressing well and Van Dijk, alongside Konaté, rarely allows simple counter attacks to unfold.
Atlético arrive with notable absences. Julián Álvarez, Josema Giménez, Almada and Baena are all out, which reduces their margin of rotation and takes away part of their attacking punch. The likely eleven is solid but not their ideal: Oblak; Llorente, Le Normand, Lenglet, Ruggeri; Barrios, Koke, Gallagher; Griezmann and Sørloth up front. There is quality, yes, but fewer game-changers than usual. Griezmann will need to drop into midfield to compensate, and that could leave Sørloth isolated against Van Dijk and Konaté, a duel the Norwegian is unlikely to dominate.
What Liverpool must manage carefully is rhythm. Against Burnley, possession was sterile for long spells, with little creation until very late. Atlético will look to reproduce that type of game, defending narrow corridors, forcing the ball wide, and waiting for that one moment to break. For Slot’s side, the key is speed in circulation and finding Wirtz in central zones. If the German can connect quickly with Salah or Gakpo, spaces will appear. And in the second half, Isak’s presence should add a new dimension: a more physical reference who can occupy Lenglet and Le Normand, allowing Salah and Wirtz to attack second balls.
History warns Liverpool not to take anything for granted. Atlético have twice before knocked them out of Europe, including that unforgettable night of 2020 when Llorente silenced Anfield in extra time. But this Atlético is not that Atlético. Injuries have reduced their stability, and the aura of invincibility in block defending is not the same. At Villarreal last weekend, Barrios and Nico González were decisive, yet the defensive line still showed cracks. Anfield will expose them further if Liverpool maintain intensity.
I expect a match of control and patience. Liverpool will not rush, but they will test Atlético’s defensive focus for ninety minutes. The visitors may resist for long periods, but given the Reds’ habit of decisive late goals and the depth that Isak now brings, it feels like one of those European nights where the hosts will eventually break through. For Slot, a win here would not only be a first statement in Europe, but also a sign that his Liverpool are already prepared to dominate this competition.
