FCSB - BOLOGNA
This game in Bucharest between FCSB and Bologna feels a lot more one-sided than the odds might suggest.
Let’s start with FCSB. Yes, they’re a big name in Romanian football, and yes, their home record in Europe isn’t terrible. But this current version of FCSB is far from intimidating.
They come into the game sitting 12th in their domestic league, just got beaten by Metaloglobus—the worst team in the Romanian top flight—and are dealing with an injury crisis that leaves them without several key players in defence and midfield. Dawa, Popescu, Graovac and Chiricheș are all out, and that leaves their backline looking fragile, inexperienced, and dangerously thin in terms of depth.
Their Europa League campaign started with a gritty 1-0 away win at Go Ahead Eagles, but they were completely outclassed at home in a 0-2 loss to Young Boys. And let’s be honest: Young Boys are not exactly a powerhouse. The Romanian side didn’t just lose that game—they were outplayed for 90 minutes.
And now they face a Bologna side that, despite its own struggles in Europe, is levels above in terms of quality, physicality, and tactical maturity.
Bologna are fifth in Serie A, coming off a well-managed 2-0 win away at Cagliari, and playing with a mix of confidence and structure. They’ve had their issues in Europe, sure, particularly away from home, and they’ve failed to win in their last five continental trips.
But the numbers don’t tell the full story. The team is evolving under Vincenzo Italiano—even if he won’t be on the bench for this match due to illness—and their recent form in Italy suggests they’ve turned a corner. The squad is deeper, more balanced, and even with rotations, the quality on the pitch should shine through.
Riccardo Orsolini is in the form of his life, with goals in four straight games and a clear sense of responsibility in attack. Santiago Castro continues to grow into his role up top, and even players like Cambiaghi and Ferguson offer a level of tactical understanding that FCSB simply can’t match. Even if Bologna rotate slightly, which they might given their Serie A schedule, the gap in quality remains significant.
Tactically, Bologna are compact, well-drilled in their pressing, and have multiple threats in transition. FCSB, meanwhile, often try to dominate possession at home, but that can actually play into Bologna’s hands—especially with a weakened backline and midfield.
If FCSB push forward, the spaces behind are going to be punished. Bologna have the players to exploit that.
Another factor is motivation. FCSB’s focus is clearly tilted toward their league survival. That’s been openly mentioned by staff around the club, and the lineup is expected to reflect it. Bologna, on the other hand, know that anything less than three points here could complicate their group stage dramatically. They’ll come to Romania to take control of this group, and I think they will.
It might not be spectacular. It might not be easy. But this is a match where the stronger, smarter, and more experienced side should eventually wear their opponent down. For me, even with the away factor and a potentially tight first half, Bologna are the right side to trust here.
ROMA - VIKTORIA PLZEN
Roma come into this one off the back of frustration in Serie A and urgency in Europe. It’s not a must-win on paper, but let’s be honest—it absolutely is if the Giallorossi are serious about going deep in this Europa League format. Viktoria Plzeň may not be pushovers, but this is one of those nights where Roma simply have to flex their muscle, and frankly, I expect them to win it—and win it well.
Plzeň’s results in Europe so far don’t look bad on the surface: a 1–1 draw away to Ferencváros and a 3–0 win at home to Malmö. But both of those came with red cards to their opponents, which tells me two things. One, they’re a bit of a scrappy, disruptive team who look to provoke mistakes. And two, their actual open play threat isn't as strong as those results suggest. When they played against Lazio last year, they fought hard, yes, but the ceiling of their game was clear—and the same limitations are still present now.
They’ll likely come to Rome and do what every mid-tier side does at the Olimpico: sit deep, clog the middle, and look to counter through Durosinmi, who’s quick, physical, and their main man up top. But that’s a plan Roma have seen a hundred times. The question is whether they’ve got the attacking clarity to break it down. This match should give them the perfect opportunity to show they do.
What I’m expecting here is Roma to finally put together a dominant 90 minutes—both with and without the ball. The loss to Inter was a wake-up call. Six clear chances missed, tactical experiments that didn’t quite work, and the sense that Gasperini overthought it. But the positive side is the reaction. The mood in Trigoria this week has been sharp, focused, and the message is clear: no excuses. Gasperini confirmed that aside from Angeliño, the whole squad is fit and available. That means Bailey could get minutes again, and Dybala is expected to start, possibly with Ferguson or Dovbyk up top.
And that’s where the real difference lies. This Roma team hasn’t quite clicked in attack yet—but it’s not far. The defence has been reliable, the structure is there, and they’ve been creating more than enough chances. What’s missing is conversion. This, against a side like Plzeň, at home, is the kind of game where that changes. Whether it’s Dybala playing between the lines, Ferguson finally starting, or even someone like Soulé popping up from deeper—it’s time for goals.
Tactically, Roma will see most of the ball. Viktoria will likely defend in a narrow 4-2-3-1, trying to deny central space, but they’ll be vulnerable to width and to runners from midfield. If Gasperini gets the balance right, and avoids another round of ‘Gas-perimenting’, we should see a composed, professional Roma that takes the lead early and builds from there. The aim isn’t just to win—it’s to win with authority.
And from a motivational point of view, this group phase doesn’t leave a lot of room to breathe. Roma are currently outside the top 24 in the table. Another slip, and they risk falling out of contention for the top eight. A big win here, and they’re right back in the fight—and they send a message to the rest of Europe.
I think the Olimpico will demand more than a narrow 1–0. This is the kind of night where a 2–0 or 3–0 feels not just possible, but necessary. There’s a gulf in quality, in squad depth, and in individual talent. All that remains is for Roma to show it. No excuses, no overcomplicating things—just a clean, dominant European win.
